A survey of young people in South Africa has revealed that as many as half of the country’s population who are of Indian-origin are considering moving abroad. The study was conducted by consumer insights company Pondering Panda and found that 22 per cent of black South Africans were also thinking about emigrating to another country.

Top of the list of favourite destinations for the majority of the respondents was the USA. This was followed by the UK and then Australia. However, South Africans of Indian origin between 18 and 34 years of age tended to choose other countries.

Pondering Panda’s market analyst, Butch Rice, said that it was white and Indian South Africans who were the most likely to relocate to another country with two out of every five admitting that they were considering emigrating.

He added that it was important that the government began to pay greater attention to the opinions of South Africa’s youth as emigration had the potential to cause a brain drain for the country.

Other surveys have revealed that the Indian community in South Africa is less than satisfied with the way the government treats them even though they are distinguished as a racial group which was disadvantaged under the laws of apartheid.
