South America emerges as new hub for adventurous expats

As the attractions of traditional expats havens such as France, Spain and even Thailand diminish, South America is emerging as a likely destination for adventurous UK migrants.

Discovered decades ago by American and Canadian ‘snow bird’ migrants as a haven far removed from their home countries’ freezing winters, South America is now on the list of Brits looking for lifestyle and warmth. The temptations of cheaper living costs, great beaches and fun nightlife are now being exploited by UK –based as well as North American relocation firms.

Ecuador is being touted as the perfect place to live the expat dream, far from the UK’s rising fuel and transportation bills, nanny state rulings and ever more unstable weather. Getting a visa is relatively straightforward and healthcare is affordable.

Brazil’s expanding economy, emerging market investments, sheer beauty, fun-loving nationals and Spanish language would seem to make the vast country a great choice for the tens of thousands of Brit long-term expats desperate to leave troubled Spain. However, it should be remembered that your UK state pension will be frozen the minute your plane takes off.

Four countries on the recently media-compiled list of the world’s top ten expat destinations are in South America. Panama heads the list, although it’s more attractive to those with considerable funds, and Uruguay, Colombia and Ecuador offer various hotspots along coastlines, in stunning mountainous locations and vibrant cities.
