Adventurous expats choosing amazing Asia
Warmer weather, exotic surroundings, ancient cultures and better work-life balances are all there for the taking in Asia. From interesting and rewarding jobs in fast-developing economies through entrepreneurial challenges to affordable retirements, Asia has it all for adventurous expats. Some popular locations such as Singapore and Hong Kong have been favourites for a while, with others such as Cambodia and Vietnam are now drawing ever-increasing numbers of Westerners looking for an alternative lifestyle experience.
For expat professionals looking for a favourable balance between salaries and expenses, Taiwan may be an unusual choice, but it ticks the right boxes with its reasonable cost of living including inexpensive accommodation. The healthcare system is high-quality and reasonably priced, and it’s considered a safe country for families and single women. Working conditions are good, and salaries leave plenty to save or spend on life’s little extras.
Ever-popular Singapore hasn’t lost its charm or its reputation as gourmet heaven for expatriates into every known variety of Asian culinary treats. Yes, it’s an expensive place to live, but education, childcare and healthcare are top class, its environment is safe and the expat community is well-established. Nowadays, it’s harder than before to get permanent residency but, as with elsewhere in Asia, the almost impossible can usually be done.
Hong Kong is another traditional favourite for professional expatriates, especially those in the financial sector. Again, it’s an expensive city, with rentals in particular on the high side in its central area. Further out, there are cheaper alternatives, and the island’s unique culture is a strong draw. Mainland China is becoming popular with entrepreneurs and offers a fascinating lifestyle at a reasonable cost as well as a huge choice of cities and smaller towns. Foreigners are more than welcome, even in rural areas.
Cambodia is very much the new kid on the expat block and is attracting an increasing number of retirees, many of whom have moved over from Thailand’s increasingly unpredictable immigration rules and regulations. Its foreign visa system is now under review and may cause problems in the future, but the lifestyle is incredibly cheap and the people incredibly friendly. Vietnam is rising fast as a preferred Asian destination for professionals, digital nomads and entrepreneurs, and is as yet a safe and inexpensive place to live and work. The cost of living is extremely low, and the country boasts a rich culture, delicious food and friendly locals.
