Are the glory days in Africa over for expat professionals
Although serious senior talent is still in high demand on the African continent, top international executives aren’t being offered the major perks and stunning salaries common over the past decade. Africa could well be described as the world’s largest emerging economy. With global investors arriving in droves and tech-related start-ups in every large city, the continent’s environment is undergoing massive changes. So-called ‘tours of duty’ no longer include the impressive list of perks formerly considered to be a vital part of every relocation package.
Costs are rising and markets are becoming ever more competitive, with companies attempting to stay lean whilst still attracting the brightest and best. Extras including private healthcare insurance, international school fees, luxury housing with full security, drivers and regular flights back to the home country aren’t featuring strongly in offers nowadays. Multinationals are now relying on adjustments to salary packages as compensation for additional expenses to be borne by those willing to relocate to African countries. Furthermore, markets are now far more competitive than in the past, with Africa’s former business backwater image now just a memory.
In addition, entry requirements have toughened up, meaning even high-end professionals aren’t guaranteed the necessary visas and work permits. Applications are also time-consuming and costly, with delays and changed requirements frequently occurring. Expats nowadays need to be able to show a combination of technical expertise and the ability to immerse themselves in their target marketplace. Salaries and perks notwithstanding, working in an emerging market economy is a challenge as regards gaining experience and a track record of success in a new business environment. For those willing to give Africa a try, there’s an enormous upside to getting experience by working within Africa’s on-the-ground realities.
