Is New Zealand the Holy Grail for disenchanted Western expats
Whether you’re a citizen of the good old US of A or a Brexit Remainer, there’s a good chance you’re wishing you could be anywhere in the world except your country of birth. Emigration is the answer for many, but where and what to do once you get there is a terrifying question, even for expat professionals known for their expertise.
Famous British scientist Richard Dawkins believes at least 50 per cent of the population of both the UK and the USA would love to live in a country where intellect might at least be appreciated. Would-be expats languishing in either land right now might well agree with him, but how many would have the guts to just get up and go? Mr Dawkins has selected New Zealand as his personal preference and, speaking to a Kiwi current affairs programme, he praised the country for its low population, saying it would be ‘nice to live there’ adding he’d go if he was invited.
He’s not the only famous person tempted by the Kiwi lifestyle, and New Zealand has always been a favourite destination for Britons looking to work or retire amid its spectacular scenery. The country has now launched a number of recruitment drives aimed at attracting post-Brexit Britons desperate to leave before reality kicks in. The healthcare sector, the construction industry, engineering and many infrastructure firms are all looking for would-be expats with the right qualifications and experience.
For those tempted by a new life in New Zealand, checking the government’s Essential Skills in Demand list is a good start, as finding your skill is needed gives an advantage when it comes to visa and work permit applications. Sectors on the list are favoured by employers as they’re able to circumvent a few of immigration’s many red tapes as regards offering the job first to a local. A visit to the New Zealand government’s CareersNZ website gets you advice and information on available jobs for both foreigners and locals.
