Hong Kong still popular after generation of expats
Hong Kong is still one of the most popular reassignments for expat professionals due to its unique atmosphere, history and position close by the vastness of mysterious mainland China. Networking is the key to success as well as to an enjoyable relocation, with the relatively small expat community welcoming newcomers and introducing them to the lifestyle. One must-have is a pocket full of business cards, as handing these around using both hands is part of the important etiquette of this half-Chinese, half-Western outpost.
Due to its 100-year history as a British possession, English is widely spoken and understood on the main island, but on the Kowloon shore and into the New Territories it’s less so. Talking with your hands and keeping smiling no matter what gets the average expatriate by in the majority of situations. Living on the main island is a relatively expensive option but gives access to everything it has to offer, from entertainment, bars, clubs and restaurants to local markets and malls. Off-island accommodation is far less pricey, and living like a local is easier. Finding a good rental apartment involves considering three factors – size, view and recent renovation. If you’re offered one with all three, get in there fast! Being firm and specific with real estate agents will save time and possibly money better spent on your new lifestyle.
Hong Kong is all about food, from street stalls through local eateries to mid-price restaurants and stunning Michelin-starred cuisine at a steep price. It’s an incredibly active city, crammed with gyms, sports clubs, watersports and other ways to stay healthy, and a short train ride gets you to Macau and on to China itself via Shenzhen. Hong Kong’s varied transportation options are state of the art, reliable and a fraction of the UK price. All told, Hong Kong deserves its popularity with several generations of expats, and is set to continue doing so.
