Singapore now all-time favourite for top tech talent
Highly qualified expats, especially those in the tech sector, have a huge choice of locations in which to pursue fame and fortune, but Singapore is still at the top of the list. Nowadays, it’s normal for expat professionals to change cities as often as they change their cars, going to whichever world city is the newest tech hub offering massive salaries for the right stuff. Singapore is regularly recognised as the prime location for ambitious expatriate professionals, and it’s now rated as the second-best tech hub on the planet.
Along with a small population of just 6.5 million, a global outlook and an inward focus on education and research, Singapore offers political stability, ease of doing business, great infrastructure and English language capability. Corporate tax rates are another attraction, one which has established the city-state as a prime location for multinationals. Employee as well as corporate tax breaks and government-sponsored investment for tech business sweetens the pill even more, to the extent that no less than 80 of the world’s 100 leading tech firms maintain a presence. As a result, it’s a haven for the best of the rest in the tech sector.
Due to its small size and small population, Singapore relies on expatriate talent and has succeeded in persuading the brightest and best to leave their established jobs and homes for a new, even more successful career in Asia. Although it’s well worth the upheaval, moving to Singapore isn’t easy, with many top-drawer expats believing the process needs a make-over. Long-term residents are doing their best to help, with one running an on-site expat survival guide aimed at new arrivals to the mega-city and offering smooth integration into the city’s expat scene. The most stressful time, he believes, is the move itself, with relocation acceleration his goal, and his Expatland Global Network is now found in London, Sydney, Melbourne and Los Angeles as well as in Singapore.
