Survey confirms expats more than happy in Malaysia
The popular Southeast Asian archipelago was ranked ninth most popular expat destination in the recently published Expat Insider survey, with its result based on affordability and the ease of settling in to a new country and culture. However, for expats working overseas, Malaysia was only rated at 27th out of the 64 countries featured in the study. The affordability of a good lifestyle was a major advantage, with 82 per cent of respondents giving the country a rating of seventh out of the 64 in the cost of living category. British expats in particular enjoyed their high salaries as set against the reasonable overall cost of living, with most saying their personal income easily covered their daily costs.
Malaysia won big on the ‘ease of settling in’ category, taking third place overall for its friendly welcome to expat incomers and its good choice of leisure and social events perfect for making new friends. The country is seen as an average location for career junkies, with half of the study’s respondents satisfied with their prospects and a far higher number praising their new lifestyles. In the language sub-category, the country took first place due to the fact that English is widely spoken, much to the relief of new expat arrivals.
Long term expats who’ve lived and worked in Malaysia since before this particular survey began aren’t at all surprised at its good ratings. Overall, the vast majority of expats are more than happy with their decisions and fully appreciate what the government has done to make their lives even easier. Local surveys taken amongst the expat community confirm larger surveys’ results, showing expatriate appreciation for easy integration, spoken English, excellent travel options made easy by good infrastructure, quality international schools, excellent healthcare and the genuine welcome given to expats by the local population.
