Liveable European destination for expat retirees on a budget
Many would-be expats, especially those from countries such as the USA where pensions are more generous than in the UK, still believe Europe is out of reach as regards its overall cost of living. One reason for this surprise affordability is that a number of Europe’s EU member states offer strong public healthcare provisions as part of a universal healthcare provision plan, thus removing the need for expensive private healthcare insurance premiums. For those incomers not wishing to give up their existing insurance, private healthcare costs can be a fraction of those in the USA, with visits to a doctor costing less than $100.
One lesser-known destination for expats is undoubtedly one of the world’s most spectacular as regards scenery and most fascinating as regards history and heritage, as well as being world-famous for its delicious, healthy cuisine. For many would-be expats, Italy has it all, from beaches to mountain villages, ancient hill towns and cities famous during the Roman era, as well as affordable homes of all ages and styles. If a relaxed life is the dream, the south is the place, with small, historic homes in local hill villages costing from €30,000 upwards. For renters, apartments in the cobbled streets of medieval towns and villages can cost just €500 monthly, or even less.
Another option popular with several generations of British expats is Portugal, famed for its slower pace of life and affordable cost of living as well as its Old-World European charm and friendly local people. Smaller towns and cities give the best choice of inexpensive properties, whether buying or renting, and eating out in stunning surroundings is surprisingly cheap. For serious gastronomes in love with French wines, moving to France is a surprisingly inexpensive option as long as the location is carefully chosen. A high-quality lifestyle doesn’t necessarily cost a fortune if you’re located away from the hi-so resorts and Paris. France’s charming country towns have much to offer, including delicious local wines at unbelievable prices.
