Expats on Malta gambling against a bad Brexit outcome
As things stand at present, whichever style of Brexit is the final result it’s expatriates who’ll bear the immediate brunt of Britain’s leaving the UK. They’re also the least able to adjust their lifestyles to an acceptable version of that which persuaded them to emigrate in the first place. Over the past several years, uncertainty has been the only certainty for Britons already overseas, those planning their expatriate retirements and those hoping to include another EU member state in their carefully-planned career strategy.
For Britons already resident in Malta, it’s expected the island’s government will take a kinder view of their predicament than many other EU member state officials. One reason is that a major earner for the economy is via its booming financial sector based on gaming, and tourism revenue is another buffer against a Brexit-induced collapse. Both sectors have seen massive growth over the past decade, as has the number of expats working in both. Rules already in the pipeline are radical as is necessary, but expats will still be able to find employment or start financial or gaming businesses without a massive amount of hassle.
Even if a no-deal exit is the eventual result, it’s likely to be far softer on the island than in, say, Germany. Expats already working or retiring seem unconcerned about yet another delay and uninterested about the upcoming general election, living their lives and planning business growth as if Brexit was happening on another planet. Possibly, and especially for those happily working in the gaming industry, they’ve become used to calculating the risks and simply going with the flow until they win!
