Brit expat retirees allergic to new languages will love Belize
The little country of Belize is an important part of the Caribbean Community due to the agricultural capacity of its arable land and its resulting ability to provide food security for its international community neighbours. Like most small countries within the group, it’s English-speaking and provides the perfect retirement hub for British expats whose linguistic skills are slightly lacking.
For many would-be expats, learning a new language with all its quirks and cultural implications is seriously off-putting, making the majority of popular retirement destinations such as Portugal, Greece and Spain decidedly off-limits. The country itself boasts pristine rainforests, a thriving marine ecology and a relatively small population as well as the year-round warm, sunny Caribbean climate so important to refugees from the UK’s dull skies and drizzle.
Reliable water sources are another attractive feature for incomers, with ground water in abundance and many rivers providing irrigation for lush gardens as well as fish for the table. Solar energy is in use, making off-grid a reality, and those yearning for a degree of self-sufficiency can be reassured that high speed internet and other 21st century technological necessities are also easily available. Perhaps its most appealing attraction is the small population’s friendly welcome to new arrivals, making it easy to become part of the local community.
Geographically located in Central America, Belize is still a part of the British Commonwealth of Nations, with its own unique culture blending with the remnants of colonial Britain. As regards safety and security, although a few areas in Belize City have issues with drug dealers, the remainder of the country is one of the planet’s safest locations. If getting away from it all is a must, this unique little land is as good as it gets.
